untitled (after Ana Mendieta), 2023. 35mm film photographs.

This project follows the tradition of Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, who imprinted or excavated a silhouette of her body in various ways across North and Central America in order to reconcile with the unsettled pain of diaspora. Taken in various locations across Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, particularly around Alice Yard, untitled captures the aftermath of private, embodied performances in which I lay on the ground, gently situating myself in this new place and gauging if I felt I belonged, or whether the land accepted me. If I felt it did, I made a protective salt circle around my body, tentatively carving out a place for myself and leaving my ghost in the space. The weather eventually erased all traces.
