rave against the dying of the light, 2023. Laser-cut plywood, speakers, strobe lights, nylon, foil.
Modelled after a real pink church on Saint Ann’s Avenue in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, rave against the dying of the light playfully negotiates the rave/club space as a place of community, relationality, and catharsis, especially for queer people of colour. In addition to strobing lights, the work emits a playlist of Caribbean, Afrobeats, and other music catalogued while travelling through Trinidad. The work alludes to the ecstatic power of music and dance, and the ways these spaces alleviate struggles associated with seeking selfhood and acceptance. It also calls to attention the complicated relationships between Caribbean and queer identities across localities as well as transnationally.
